St. Augustine: a vacation recap

Well, it's that time of year again.  Time for family vacations!

This year, we made our first trip to St. Augustine, Florida.

It's a beautiful area and very family friendly.  You can even drive on the beach!

Unfortunately, there wasn't a whole lot of sunshine, so our tanning time was very short!

We managed to get in a couple of hours each day before the thunder and rain rolled in.

This was Lucy's second trip to the beach.  Last year we went to PCB on the gulf.  The sand there is much different than on the East Coast...it's a lot looser!  Does that make sense? lol!

So we didn't let Lucy on the beach much on that trip.  We were always concerned she'd get sand in her eye.  We have to be very careful with her after her eye surgery.  But she got a little more beach time on this trip.

The beach was not crowded, so it was easy to take her for short walks.

She wasn't quite sure what to think of the ocean water, but didn't seem to be afraid of the waves.

Our condo was on the beach side, so we only had a short walk to the beach everyday.

Lots of beautiful flowers growing in the sand dunes.

We stayed at Ocean Village Community.  It was a really nice place except for the fleas that found Lucy in the grass outside our building!  We've never experienced a problem with fleas before but with this being a pet-friendly place, I'm sure it's bound to be a problem from time to time.  The St. Augustine grass was much taller than the grass we have at home.  There was lots of room for little fleas to hang out!  When Lucy walked through it, she was up to her elbows...wait...dogs don't have elbows! [laugh] But you know what I mean ;)

We noticed her scratching a lot that Friday, but didn't know why.  We decided to put her in the tub and then we saw them.  We picked about 15 fleas off of her!  I called her vet to find out how long it would take the monthly meds she takes to kill them.  She assured me it would kill them - we just found them before they had a chance to die.  That made me feel a little better.  I certainly didn't want to take any home with us!

You see her and Scott in the picture above?  We were on the 3rd floor, so we had to help her up and down some of the stairs.  After we bathed her, she seemed better, but must be allergic to flea bites.  She actually had to take Benadryl for several days later.  She's high maintenance, I tell you...lol!

We found one small patch of grass away from everything else.  When it was potty time, we'd tote her out there, sit her down, encourage her to hurry, and sweep her back up before anything could bite her.

Since we couldn't spend a lot of time on the beach, we headed to the historic side of town.  It was a very beautiful place!  St. Augustine is America's oldest city.  There are lots of historical buildings to see there, as well as ships, a fort, and cemeteries.

Our favorite shopping place!

Someone playing a musical instrument will always get Scott's attention!

I hope you all get a chance to take a vacation or stay-cation this year too!  It's so nice to just get away for a few days and have fun with family and friends!
