Sheltered in the arms of God

I was driving home from work the other day when I noticed a storm brewing in the distance.  Although it was bright and sunny on the road where I was, it was obvious that I was headed straight toward those dark storm clouds.  Lightening was flashing in the distance and the winds started blowing furiously around me.  For one split second, I thought I should turn around.  It had to be too dangerous to keep going forward.  But that thought didn’t last long.  My husband was at home waiting on me and that’s where I wanted to be.  It didn’t matter in that moment what I had to drive through to get there.  I just wanted to be safe at home with him.

As I concentrated on driving through the torrential rain that had just hit me, I was reminded of how many times God has sheltered me through the storms of life.  I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the times He’s seen me through difficult days.

I heard a saying once that I’ve thought about often.  “Sometimes God calms the storm, but sometimes God lets the storm rage and calms His child”.  Just as I believe God guided me safely home that afternoon, I believe He is guiding me on my journey through life until I make it to my final home with Him in heaven.

It’s been during the darkest, loneliest times of my life that He’s put His loving arms around me and sheltered me not only from the hurts of this world, but from my own bad choices.  He reminds me that He is in complete control and I do not have to be afraid.  He is God and I am not.  He has power over the winds and rain and decides when to tell them to stop.

As a child, I heard my mother and my aunt sing an old favorite, “Sheltered in the arms of God”.  The words still touch my heart today:

I feel the touch of hands so kind and tender.
They're leading me in the paths that I must trod.
I'll have no fear for Jesus walks beside me
For I'm sheltered safe in the arms of God.

So let the storms rage high,
The dark clouds rise,
They won't worry me;
For I'm sheltered safe within the arms of God.
He walks with me,
And naught of earth shall harm me,
For I'm sheltered in the arms of God.

How beautiful Lynn! Yes, God is good soooo very good. His watchcare and provision throughout my life has been amazing. HE has sheltered me in his arms through salvation of my soul and yes, through simple safety and provision. Great post! Blessings!
