Valentine Treats

There are a several holidays during the year that I usually get a "little something" special for Lucy.  So Valentine's Day is no different.  For those of you who aren't dog lovers, just humor me.....I don't have a small child around the house anymore to make crafts with for holidays and other special occasions, so I have to use other outlets to keep from stifling my creativity - ha ha!

I certainly don't forget to do special things for my family as well.  For Valentine's Day this year, Scott and I played it 'low key' and just grilled steaks for supper.  We even invited my mama to come over so she wouldn't be alone.  Dillan had other plans, so it was just us three...and Lucy.

I baked special cookies for everyone and bought them sweet cards.  Dillan's kinda outgrew the whole candy/toy thing of course, so I gave him $$!

While I was in the baking mode, I decided to bake some homemade dog treats too....Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers to be exact!  Sounds yum, doesn't it?  I found the recipe on the internet around Christmas and have wanted to try this for a while.  Since we've been trying to keep Lucy's weight under control, I figured why not.  They're much healthier for her than anything in the store.

Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 375 deg.  In a bowl, combine flour and baking power.

In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well.

This is the PB and milk before combining with dry ingredients
Needless to say, it was trying to fly everywhere before I added it to the dry ingredients! Looks kinda gross!

Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead.  Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes.  Since it was Valentine's, I cut out hearts :)

Bake for 15 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown.

Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container.

I decided since the recipe made so many, we'd share them with Lucy's cousins - other family members' dogs :)  I made little tags with their names (Maggie, Spunky, Rascal, Tink......) and attached to the bags.

After all...EVERYBODY deserves a little love!
Happy Valentine's Day!!!

I'm going to have to try making those treats for my dog. I just bought some homemade treats for him and he liked them.
We didn't really do Valentines around here this year. I'll cut them into bone shapes. More manly. Can you say "manly" for a dog?
